Following recent worldwide events, security priorities in this sector are presently focused on eliminating threats in airports and to aircraft carriers. Over the next few years it is anticipated that this focus will broaden to encompass other forms of transport and the transportation infrastructure. The US took the lead earlier this year, by creating a new unified transportation authority, the TSA. It is estimated that the annual budget under the control of this authority, to cover aviation, transit and port security will run at somewhere between $2 and $6 billion.

As the terrorist threat has evolved, we have applied new technologies in pursuit of more effective detection. This recent reorganization around an integrated business model has enhanced our ability to serve this sector. Our continuing success in this sector will be based on strengthening existing relationships and solution specifications developed in collaboration with the leading transportation standards authorities. Past collaboration with transportation security authorities have helped to provide airports and other facilities with drug and explosives detection systems. More than 6,500 IONSCAN(r) drug and explosives trace detectors are in operation worldwide. More than 3,500 units are deployed in US airports alone. While the traditional approach in airports has been to screen baggage for explosives, with passenger screening limited to metal detection and physical search; the increased threat from suicide bombers using non-metallic devices has exposed a loophole in many existing security systems.
