Fire Department Honor Legion Medal For Merit

Police Officer John Galasso, Shield No. 11745 34th Precinct

Police Officers Michael Callahan and John Galasso were on patrol just past midnight on June 17, 1990, when they observed two males embroiled in an argument. One male, armed with a bat, ran to his car and sped off as the other male drew a weapon and fired several rounds at the car. After the car crashed, the man fled on foot with the gunman continuing to shoot at him. The officers quickly approached the suspect, ordering him to drop his weapon. The gunman turned and fired a shot at the officers. Both officers returned fire, mortally wounding the suspect.
